Descant Making Renovations

Descant, a Canadian literary magazine done in print only, has put out a call for poetry, short stories, essays, art and photography that fits the theme “renovation.”  Beauty, eh?  (Sorry… couldn’t help myself).  They are a paying market in the semi-pro bracket, and as a quarterly, the competition is pretty rough.  Be sure to send your cleanest, bestest, niftiest (yes, I know…) work to these folks.  Making the cut will be a real feather in thy cap.  The deadline is March 15th, 2011 and for fiction they want 1,000 to 7,500 words.

Barrier Islands Review – Tropic & Meridian

Barrier Island Review, both a print and electronic rag, has put out a call for their 8th issue.  The theme is Tropic & Meridian, so Ahoy ye mateys!  I hope that’s what they meant… they’re a literary magazine, so they probably don’t need pirates….  They are not a paying market, but they do encourage new and established writers alike.  The deadline is March 15th for poetry, flash fiction (500-1,000 words) or short stories (1,000 – 4,000 words).

The Legendary and a Little Slam and Flash

The Legendary, an eLit mag wants submissions for their Slam & Flash issue… at least, that’s how I’m interpreting this.  Generally, they take poetry, flash fiction and short stories (up to 7,500 words.)  But in this case I think they want more of the former and little or no of the latter.  The deadline is March 10th, 2011, and they are a non-paying market.

Little Patuxent Review and the Land of Make Believe

Little Patuxent Review has put out a call for stories in on about or from the land of make-believe.  They look pretty literary but the feel I get from the site is that they’re pretty limber on interpretation.  They want poetry or short fiction between 1,000 and 3,000 words.  The deadline is March 1st, 2011 and they’re a no-pay market… but they sure do look swell.

THEMA – Issue on Reality

These are literary folks looking for both established and new writers.  They make a point of saying they take three months after the deadline to get back to you, which is pretty standard actually.  The theme for the March 1st, 2011 deadline is “Your Reality or Mine.”  They offer token payment for short fiction, pay semi-pro for poetry and only take hard-copy submissions (okay, so they’re not green).  They publish three times per year in print format only.
